COME OUT SWINGIN’!

It’s May of 1965, just months after the assassination of Malcolm X, and the controversial Muhammad Ali vs. Sonny Liston heavyweight title bout has been moved at the last minute to Lewiston, Maine, the unlikeliest venue ever for a world championship fight.

Mickey St. Pierre, the second assistant deputy city manager of Lewiston, sees this turn of events as his hometown’s chance to take its place among the world’s great cities. With his boundless enthusiasm, he fires up the colorful characters of Lewiston to play host to celebrity jet setters and the world’s top sportswriters.

But then word gets out that hit men who followed Malcolm X instead of Elijah Muhammad when the Nation of Islam split up are on their way to Lewiston to murder Ali in the ring.

COME OUT SWINGIN’! premiered at the Gendron Franco Center in Lewiston. Brian Daly wrote the book, music, and lyrics.

LAUGHING ALL THE WAY premiered at the Schoolhouse Arts Center with an all-ages cast of 44. There are 15 songs in the show; 11 are old favorites in the public domain, and I wrote 4 new ones. Here's what the story is about: The Wassails are nutty about Christmas, and their rosy holiday glow keeps them from seeing what's really going on around them. Only the baby knows the score, but he hasn't learned how to  talk yet, so he can't tell them what's up. And it's not good.

CAULDRON BUBBLE

A high school student puts the Macbeth Curse on a school production of The Scottish Play—or does he?

"It's  a really fun and engaging play. A play within a play, all the drama of  high school, and rapping witches—what's not to love? Our ensemble of high school actors had a tremendous amount of fun working on this  show--and learned a few things about MACBETH in the process!"  — Putnam Smith, Director

"It's  fun, fast paced, and clever. Lots of great casting possibilities!" —  Wendy Poole, former Executive Director of The Theater Project

SQUEEZE ME!

This musical comedy set in New York City in 1961 is about a woman struggling to keep her plastics factory in business so she can provide employment for her crew of overlooked oddballs. To save the company, she commissions the first industrial musical.

Book, Music, and Lyrics by Brian Daly

“If you’re looking for a fun night out, go see SQUEEZE ME!, an industrial musical at The Theater Project in Brunswick. We saw it last night and it was delightful. Every song was eminently hummable, and the cast made the most of a big show in a tiny space. The dialogue and lyrics and story—all so witty, like musicals of yore.”

Monica Wood, novelist and playwright (PAPERMAKER, The One-In-a-Million Boy, and How to Read a Book)

“I very much enjoyed SQUEEZE ME! As you know from the documentary, I have what I call "comedy damage," so for me to be chuckling at the cleverness of the writing (and the zest of the performances) means you've really accomplished something in my book.”

Steve Young, comedy writer/performer (BATHTUBS OVER BROADWAY)
